When Jimmy Page wrote "Stairway To heaven", few would've thought that there could be a literal meaning to the song. One of them was Michel Virlogeux. This French structural engineer is responsible for designing the tallest bridge in the world called the Millau Viaduct. At 1000 feet high and sometimes standing taller than the cloud line, it surely has a heavenly feel to it. This southern France Bridge has already found its place in the seven engineering wonders of the world. Another member of this elite group is The Panama Canal. TATA's latest innovation a Rs. 1 lakh car is another example on genius and the story behind its making is nothing short of inspiring. These engineers over the years have continuously scorned the notion "it can't be done". Engineering gives you the power to create, sometimes things which are beyond imagination. Be it transportation, construction, computers or something as small as a hairpin, engineering has and will exist as an essential part of our lives. Even the wheel, pulley, lever engineered by the early man are consistent with the modern definition of engineering. 

Specializations:

 Information Technology and Computer Science:

Picture this. A classroom featuring electronic white boards.  The teachers writing equations on these boards with electronic pens.  And the students don't have to choose between concentrating on the teacher and scribbling the equations into notebooks, devoting all their energy to listening, then download the equations straight into the laptops they've plugged into their desks. Seems like a distant reality? Not quite. In fact, the Vellore Institute of technology in Tamil Nadu is presently using this technology in its classrooms. Mechanical Engineering:

Heavy machinery, or light machine tools mechanical engineers have had a major role to play in their development.Mechanical engineering is applying laws of physics for design, manufacturing, installation, operation and mantainence of machines of all shapes and kind to be used in the industries. It is a highly challenging job requiring innovative thinking, IT, designing and analytical skills.

Electronic Engineering:

Electronic Engineering as the name suggests deals with the behavior of electronic devices, systems, equipments like television, radio, computers etc. Electronic Engineering involves solving practical problems and developing on the shortcomings of electronic equipment. For instance, till 1970's black and white Televisions were used. But then developing on the picture tube, color televisions were introduced. An electronics engineer co-ordinates with specialists to design, produce, test and supervise the manufacture of complex products and systems which are then used in industries including defense, hospital, computer industries etc. They control production and manufacturing processes and look after the installation and maintenance.

Emerging Fields in Engineering:

Bioengineering:

Bioengineering means applying the expertise of engineering to concerns of human health and management.  The knowledge acquired through the latest developments in the fields of molecular biology, microbiology is used to better the design on medical equipment, diagnostic equipment etc. Bioengineering combines the principles of engineering with biological knowledge in sciences such as genetics, neurobiology, cytology and physiology. Bioengineers work with doctors to learn the major emerging health concerns (like depression in the United states) and offer technical solutions. Though bioengineers work with health professionals, they are not restricted to the medical field. They have a great understanding of living systems as complex systems which can be applied to many fields including entrepreneurship.

Eligibility:

You can take the entrance tests which are conducted by a almost all engineering colleges if you are appearing for the 10+2 examination. The minimum eligibility for joining an engineering college is passing in 10+2 or equivalent exam from a recognized board/university with a 50% aggregate in Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry.

Job Opportunities:

Engineering is without a doubt the most successful job prospect in India. Every year thousands of students sit for the entrance exams. It's probably the only profession that every industry has an opening for and number of jobs in each industry is very high. In a recent survey conducted 8,50,000 were available for the I.T. sector alone. The number of jobs in mechanical and electronic engineering has always seen a very steady rise.
